Experiment Definitions

When creating a new experiment, users can select an experiment definition, which sets the structure and purpose of the experiment. In Uncountable, experiments are platform entities, and definitions act as tailored variations of that entity for specific use cases.

Selecting an experiment definition when creating a new experiment

A schema can include many custom definitions, but three standard types are always available:

  • Experiment – A general-purpose definition for recipes or formulations.
  • Test Sample – Tracks samples derived from tests or characterizations of a parent experiment. Test samples function independently but maintain a built-in link to their parent.
  • Lots – Represents a lot or batch of a specific material.

Defining experiments this way also supports permission control. For instance, an inventory manager may need access only to “Lots” while being restricted from standard “Experiment” definitions.

Creating New Experiment Definitions

New experiment definitions are created and managed by admins in the Definitions tab of the Form Admin page. When creating a new experiment definition, set the type to “recipe”.
